There are many reasons to visit the Isle of Canna in “the quieter months”.

Winter is often the best time on Canna to see eagles, buzzards and peregrine falcons as they can be seen hunting along the hill ridges. Seals, eider ducks and many other winter residents stay in the safety of Canna Harbour where they can find shelter and food. Canna’s Dark Skies provide the chance for you to watch the stars and planets emerge and the full Milky Way can be see stretched across the sky.

Our peaceful Isle of Canna is also superb for walking - follow our suggested itinerary to discover its history and archaeology - easier to see in these months when the bracken has died back. Bring your bike - our track roads are good for bikes and it will help you see more of the island.

If you fancy a peaceful Christmas or a New Year with a group of friends our accommodation is open all year - enjoy the days walking the island and enjoying our amazing winter light and views then relax in the evening with friends.

If you would like to help our community while on holiday why not volunteer for a few hours?

Walk to your accommodation and relax into your new home for the next few days! On your walk you can browse at the Canna Community Shop (open 24 hours/free wifi). In the evening wrap up warm and step outside to watch the planets and stars emerge from the dark night sky.

Day 2

Start the day slowly with a walk towards Tarbert, the Souterrains and the King of Norway’s grave with northern cliff views. Keep your eyes open for seals on the shore or watching you from the shallows.

Day 3

Now that you are settled in its time for a big walk! Will you take the Sanday or Canna circular path? Both walks will give you beautiful views with the chance to see seals, eagles and seabirds skywards with sheep, cows, otters and rabbits inland!

Day 4

Take the opportunity to have a stroll past Tighard Guest House to visit Margaret Fay Shaw’s Summer Hut in Tighard Park field. Then follow Saturnino’s Path through the peaceful woodlands and visit Canna House gardens.

Day 5

After a more restful day 4 it’s time to do another big walk! This time will you take the Sanday or Canna circular path? This walk will give you beautiful views with the chance to see seals, eagles and seabirds skywards with sheep, cows, otters and rabbits inland! Look out and see the other islands in the distance - is that Coll, Tiree, Barra or Uist??

Day 6

If you would like to help our community then there are several ways you can do this. We always need help with beach cleaning all the plastic that gets wash up on our shores. Occasionally we need other skills so please let us know what you would like to contribute and we can try to find a volunteer job to suit you!

Day 7

Occasionally it is windy and rainy in the winter months! This is your chance to delve into the many books written about Canna and the Small Isles. Or take the time to write a few letters and postcards and drop them into our mailbox at the Post Office. Use our community space the Shearing Shed with darts board and table tennis to while away the evening and perhaps challenge the resident champions to a game!

Our peaceful Isle of Canna full of nature and wildlife looks forward to welcoming you!
